There are five energetic and material foods that we rely upon to maintain the quality and length of our lives.
Four of these foods are well known, while the fifth, the most crucial of all, still remains substantially an enigma, even to this day. The first four of these foods have been recognized since ancient times as the fundamental powers upon which all life depends. The Essenes of Galilee, contemporaries of Jesus Christ and with whom Jesus is reported to be associated, knew these four foods as the angels of earth, water, air and fire. In the ancient sciences of astrology and alchemy the four foods were called the four elements and the four angels of the Essenes were known as the four elementals.
The twelve astrological signs are still associated with the powers of earth, air, water and fire. In ancient Babylon the element of earth corresponded with the symbol of the bull, water with the symbol of the snake, air with the symbol of the bird (usually an eagle) and fire with the symbol of the lion. This tradition continued in the fundamentals of Christianity and is why these four powers were ascribed to the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In the four corners of many ancient churches you can still find today the image of a bull, bird, lion and angel (which often replaced the snake).
For the alchemists, whose name was derived from Khem (the original name of ancient Egypt) the ultimate alchemical vessel was the human being. Inside the human being the four elements and their inner properties, the four elementals, would mix and this would allow connection to the fifth element, a quintessence (fifth essence) that they saw to be the very soul of life. This quintessence they called ether which is the root of the word etheric, part of the electromagnetic field that surrounds each one of us and which is the layer of our aura that most closely surrounds our body. The etheric is usually the densest part of our aura and also the easiest to see. The size and power of our etheric demonstrate the strength and vitality of the vital essence that is radiating from our being. This strength is determined by the quality of the five foods that we process at any given time.
A more comprehensive name for ether is the astral light or energy worlds. The astral light consists of 7 primary levels or astral planes that are contained within the aura of the planet. These seven levels, each containing different natures of energy, provide us with our fifth essential food. This fifth food is the energy that we connect to from the astral planes according to how we think, feel, and act, and is most determining in the moment by moment changes in our energetic state. Insights into the laws that govern this fifth energetic food have produced expressions such as “You become what you think about” and “Like attracts like.” It is the wish to understand and utilize the workings of this fifth element that gave rise to the success of the film The Secret and has caused people to consciously seek to use what is now being termed “The Law of Attraction” to obtain their life’s desires.
The alchemists left us many clues to their practices. Even the name alchemist by anagram is St. Michael, the name of a power that they called upon in many alchemical procedures. Although religious art of the Roman Church showed the etheric and the aura, the knowledge of the fifth element and the study of the aura and the etheric were discouraged by the Church. Thus the motto of the alchemists and the Gnostics (those that seek to know) became “to know, to will, to dare and to keep silent.”
“In the ancient sciences of astrology and alchemy the four foods were called the four elements and the four angels of the Essenes were known as the four elementals.”

Although modern science has replaced the four elements with a Periodic Table (to which new elements are added pe-riodically), it does not affect the fundamental fact of there being four basic natures of food or fuel that are crucial to all life. The coming together of these four in the living vessel of a human being gives rise to consciousness, which is made possible by connection to the fifth element, the astral light or energy worlds and all that it contains.
This ancient understanding of the energies essential for life works today as it always has. The fundamental nature of our human design and systems has not changed and our level of energetic fitness still depends upon the quality, quantity, and nature of the five foods that we process today as it did thousands of years ago.
Think of the difference between being near the top of a high mountain and what it is like on a busy city street. It is not only the noise and pollution level that is different. There is not only a difference in the quality of the earth, water, air and sunlight but also in the ionic content of the atmosphere. We can only wonder what it must have been like to live in the atmosphere of the Earth hundreds of years ago.
Here are a few practical steps to increase the quality of the astral air or energy worlds forces and powers that your body, soul, mind and emotions breathe in and out every living moment.
1. Be careful what you think about. When you think about something you use the radio set of your mind to tune in to its frequency. By so doing you begin to call it to you. This is particularly true regarding what you think about in repetition as these repetitive thoughts become a core belief that can govern your reality.
2. Be careful what you feel. Feelings are even more potent than thoughts when it comes to attracting energies from the astral field of the planet and from the energy fields of others. If a regular brain wave is like a signal of ten units of power, a strong feeling can emit hundreds of units of power. Of course, most powerful of all is when feelings and thoughts are traveling together. This is the core power of prayers and positive affirmations.
3. Increase your awareness about the electro-magnetic ecology in which you live and take action to minimize the artificial energy waves in your immediate environment.
As human beings we are participants in an abundant universe. The universe offers us five prime foods which are the energies that support our lives, both externally and internally. The universe has placed here everything that we need to nourish and support our lives. The four elements provide us with the nourishing and sustaining platform of the energies of fire, air, water and earth while the quintessence, the mysterious fifth element which we hear whispered about throughout the ages, offers us the opportunity to become conscious co-creators of our life, in partnership with the universe.
The quintessence offers us the crowning opportunity of a consciousness that we can direct according to our will. What it is that we will and will not choose to do within the range of permissions this opportunity offers is, of course, up to us and will be decided by how we live our lives day by day and choice by choice.
