In my work transforming and healing the energy of people, animals, and spaces, I’ve learned that aggressive energy work is often not the most effective path to lasting, meaningful change. While we all long to move beyond our pain, cleanse our energy, and heal and remove blockages, a forceful approach can sometimes do more harm than good. Rather than trying to aggressively “clear” energy or eliminate trauma from the body or aura, a gentler method—using awareness and the energy of light—can create powerful and sustainable transformation.

Our energy is intimately interwoven with our bodies, nervous systems, and the subtle ways we interact with the world. Even when we consciously desire healing or growth, our deeper systems may resist change, especially if they’ve adapted to a state of tension or pain. By and large, this is due to our system attempting to protect us from further pain and danger, but it may interfere with our well-meaning attempts to shift our energy and our environment. There is usually an urge to ignore and push past this protective force, but imagine your system is like an unheard child: the more this voice is ignored or silenced, the louder it will scream. In this way, the attempt to heal can unintentionally become a battle against wounded parts of ourselves.

Let There Be Light: A Gentle Approach to Healing Trauma in the Body and Energy Field

When we force intensive clearing, energy work, or other healing modalities that our system cannot receive and embrace, we may wonder why we are not progressing despite constant effort. That’s why shifting our intention from removal to illumination can make all the difference. Instead of focusing on getting rid of trauma, pain, or stuck emotions, we acknowledge our feelings and sensations and then use light energy to support and transmute the heavy energy that may be blocking us.

Light always transforms darkness. When you turn on a light in a dark room, the light eradicates the darkness. If the light is on, there is no way to add more darkness–the only way to do so is to dim the light. Likewise, when we bring light into our bodies and energy fields, we allow heavy or blocked energy to transmute naturally.

This approach doesn’t trigger the body’s defenses because it does not seek to ignore or eliminate pain but instead acknowledges and supports it. It offers space and displays trust to your system, allowing release to happen organically, when the body is ready.

Best of all, this is something anyone can do. You don’t need advanced training to use light as a healing tool. It can be practiced simply with your hands and the power of visualization. Whether or not you perceive energy directly, your body already communicates where attention is needed. Do you have areas of chronic tension, tightness, or discomfort? When you are anxious or fearful, do you feel a constriction in your chest or a knot in your stomach? These sensations are messengers and entry points for healing.

A Simple Light Practice:

Begin by closing your eyes and gently tuning into your body. Notice how you feel. Where is there tension, ache, or discomfort? Place a hand over one of these areas with love and care. If it feels accessible to you, allow yourself to sit with the sensation for a moment. Let your body, energy, and nervous system know that you are listening and receptive.

Next, rub your hands together and visualize a column of light rising from deep in the earth, and another descending from the sky. See these columns of healing, golden light meet in your hands. As you breathe, feel this light building between your palms.

Take a few breaths as you generate and accept the light from Earth and the universe, and when you feel ready, place your hands on the part of your body calling for your attention. Feel the light radiate around the area, expanding bigger and bigger, until this light engulfs your entire body. Imagine the light expanding—radiating out through the body, into the aura, then beyond: into the room, your home, your neighborhood, your city, and the world. Sit in this feeling and the sensations that arise when you and your surroundings are bathed in this beautiful light.

When you feel ready, gently picture the light returning to your body. Wiggle your toes, shrug your shoulders, or make soft fists to ground yourself in the physical world. You can choose to repeat this with another area of the body or energy, or simply move forward with your day.

This practice can be as brief or as expansive as you need and is safe to do every day. It is endlessly modifiable, and I encourage you to experiment and find the process that feels best for your unique energy and system. Healing does not need to bring more pain. Sometimes, a gentle approach is the most powerful and profound.
