Silk is the "Queen of Textiles. It takes 8000 worms consuming approximately 350 pounds of mulberry leaves to supply enough silk for 10 blouses! Silk is one of the oldest textile fibers known to man. It has been used by the Chinese since the 27th century BC. Silk is mentioned by Aristotle and became a valuable commodity both in Greece and Rome. During the Roman Empire, silk was sold for its weight in gold.

The farming of silk has changed little through the millennia. Silkworm larvae are reared on bamboo trays and fed continuously
with mulberry leaves harvested by hand. After six weeks, the caterpillars form their silk cocoons. Each cocoon, smaller
than your thumb, is made of ONE silk fiber roughly three thousand feet in length.

Thousands years ago, a nine ounce length of purple silk in the Middle Eastern city of Constantinople could cost the equivalent of
$23,000.00!

It takes about 12 pounds of cocoons to produce one pound of silk. The cocoons must be softened in hot water and the silk
threads are then reeled out, ready to be processed, dyed, and woven into fabric.
Silk, or soie in French, is the strongest natural fiber. A steel filament of the same diameter as silk will break before a filament of silk. Silk absorbs moisture, which makes it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

All silk is washable. Silk is a natural protein fiber, like human hair, taken from the cocoon of the silkworm. Most silk fabrics
can be hand washed.
Silk worms feed on a diet of mulberry leaves, producing the finest, silkiest fibers. The mulberry trees must be cared for,the leaves plucked, chopped and almost spoon fed to the young larvae every few hours. The trees are then pruned and
sprayed to await the next season's crop.

Even though silk comprises only 0.2 percent of the world's production of textile fabrics, it will continue as a luxurious,
sought-after cloth for the discriminatingindividual.

SILK COMFORTERS FOR THE BEDROOM:

How is a silk comforter made? The best silk comforters are filled with mulberry silk. Long silk filling is more expensive because they are directly produced from an oval-shape cocoon that is supposed to produce high quality silk fabric. The cocoon
is first stretched into a large web, after that it is stretched to open even more into one layer for the filling of a silk-filled comforter. It takes many layers and many cocoons to make a thick enough batting.

Why choose a silk comforter?
Most people decided to choose a silk comforter for its warmth and incredible lightweight, also for being filled with 100%
natural silk. Silk is one of the lightest and strongest natural fibers. Silk fabrics have a very high degree of heat retention capability
and add a perfect layer of warmth. Silk absorbs moisture well, quickly and releases it quickly as silk is fast drying. Natural
silk is light, very supple and constantly equalizes temperature, making this a perfect year round comforter. It is also good for
your complexion and for your health. With the current trend towards healthy living, more and more people have chosen silk-filled
comforters as a healthier alternative to down-filled comforters. It is said that silk is the least allergenic of the natural fibers.
