Sustainable Metro Areas
DISTRIBUTED RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
Sustainable Metro Areas
Marcus A. Salva
A thesis presented to the faculty of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, New York Institute of Technology, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Science in Energy Management.
Chapter 1
Introduction
Much of the current environmental crisis is framed in terms of exhaustible energy and its misuse. Designers, engineers, and policy makers address the crisis with solutions to increase efficiency and harvest renewable energy. This thesis will explain the environmental and resource (including energy) predicament in different terms. Once we understand the predicament in different terms, alternate strategies employing current technologies will be posed.
The thesis will lay out an argument for sustainability based on an ecological footprint model combined with an efficiency model. Currently, a majority of designers, engineers, and policy makers (hereafter: concerned professionals) instinctually defer to a high-density model of development that will increase public infrastructure use, which increases efficiency. The logical outcome of the high-density efficient model creates a relatively efficient, unsustainable development model. There is not a dichotomy of developing solely by either the high-density efficiency model, or alternately the ecological footprint model. With the right balance, both can be synthesized symbiotically, creating a system emulating a natural resource cycle.
The paradigm will be based on natural systems and patterns, replicating the efficiency inherent in nature (that has over time created a sustainable cycle). The nature-derived model arranges society (social interaction) based on human tendencies, which are also found in many animals. The infrastructure supporting humans and ecosystems are based on the way energy flows in nature. This arrangement of humans and ecosystems synthesized by nature emulated infrastructural design will create a redundant self-healing system, which gives resource security to society.

The I Ching Oracle, as Defined by Itself
by Carol K. Anthony and Hanna Moog
Carol K. Anthony and Hanna Moog are co-founders of The I Ching Institute in Stow, Massachusetts. Their ground breaking work on health and well being is featured in their most recent books, I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way and Healing Yourself the Cosmic Way. Their study and experience working with the I Ching span over 25 years, contributing highly regarded pioneering work to the field. Carols past acclaimed books include A Guide to the I Ching and The Philosophy of the I Ching.
The I Ching Institute was founded in 2000 by Carol K. Anthony and Hanna Moog, to teach and share the new discoveries they learned from the I Ching. These new discoveries came about after they had learned a new way to communicate with the oracle that enabled them to clarify its messages.
The I Ching (in simplified terms) is the Number One wisdom book of China. It is the foundation of the Chinese culture, and the origin of Chinese philosophy, and as such, is the wellspring of both Confucianism and philosophical Taoism. Its philosophy is at the root of all Chinese arts, of medicine, and acupuncture, and it has influenced many offshoot applications such as T'ai Chi, Chi Gong, Feng Shui, and Chinese cooking.
More precisely, the I Ching is an ancient oracle that is designed to answer people's most fundamental questions. Put in its own terms, it is a way of reading what is contained in our DNA, which the I Ching calls our inner truth. It is the knowledge stored in our deepest cell structures that tells us about ourselves, about our place in the Cosmos, and about the Cosmos itself. It is this knowledge that makes it possible for us humans to interface with our natural environment seamlessly, without the necessity of thinking. Our access to it is not directly through our mind, but through our inner bodily senses. They are our five inner senses of perception: inner seeing, inner hearing, inner taste, touch, and smell, which have the function of translating the knowledge that is stored in our DNA in the form of feelings and images into a language that speaks to us as our "commonsense." Our commonsense then brings it into our conscious awareness. The oracle is another translator for this knowledge, for those times when we have become separated from our inner senses: it goes one step further by translating this deep inner truth into words.

Healing from the tree's point of view
Green Centrics
presented by:
James J. Conroy, Ph.D.
The Tree Whisperer
The bad news is that trees and forests are dying all over the globe. The good news is that there is a new kind of technology which can repair the weakening effects of global climate changes and pollution, reverse tree decline and strengthen forests. "Weakening," as we interpret it, means the degradation and compromise of the tree's internal functions such as movement of fluids through the xylem and phloem, uptake of water and nutrients, photosynthesis or cell division.
A tree, plant or forest operates like an orchestra. When all the instruments of an orchestra are in tune, playing the same music and coordinating at the correct beat, we think of this as harmony and coordination. For a tree, that would represent a vigorous, healthy state of growth. "Weakening" in a tree is as if the instruments in its inner orchestra were each playing different music, off beat and out of tune. It is the disruption or collapse of both functionality AND coordination of the myriad of inter-related and interdependent parts and functions. These sophisticated and inter-connected feedback loops become chaotic or simply break down.
We do not use the word "weakening" to refer to structural weakness, although structural weakness such as dead limbs can result from the degeneration of internal functionality. We also do not use the word "weakening" to refer to the attack of insects or diseases. When they are present, that is an indication of an already-weakened tree to which the opportunistic insects or diseases come as a part of their own life cycle.
http://www.strengthenforests.com
A new kind of solution:
With the advent of Dr. Jim Conroy's holistic and alternative technologies--Green Centrics and CoExistence Technologies--there is now a practical, affordable and effective solution for reversing decline in trees and for strengthening forests.
These technologies are grounded in the last 100 years of new sciences such as quantum physics, holistic systems, living systems, bio-energy dynamics, intentionality and others. These systems also make use of advances and techniques from HUMAN-based alternative health care systems like Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Reiki, Touch for Health, Healing Touch, EMDR, EFT, BodyTalk, Matrix Energetics and more.
The approach offers a global paradigm shift--a shift in thinking for open-minded people who want to recoup the living tree and plant resources which Earth still has as well as help to ensure that new plantings will survive and thrive.
Editor's note: We would like to present Dr Conroy's indepth information that will both inspire and challenge conventional practice. Please read on to learn more.

A Moving Experience
by Victoria Pendragon, DD, OMM
There are two household experiences that can disrupt a peaceful life like nothing else, remodeling and moving. I've been through both, but my most recent experience, a move not only from one state to another but from one state of mind to another was for me the most profound.
Moving from a twenty-five year long marriage and living in a condo in the cosmopolitan outskirts of metropolitan Philadelphia to living alone in a third floor walk-up in an old multi-family dwelling that once housed the workers who toiled at the nearby mills of Woonsocket, Rhode island was something I hadn't planned on. I moved in June of 2008.
In February of that year I had no clue that anything like this was in the offing.
When we first met, my husband, Dodd and I vowed to help each other become the people we were meant to be. Twenty-five years later, as that began promise began to take full form, we discovered that the people we were meant to be, weren't meant to be with each other. The realization came suddenly and not without pain but we both knew that the inevitable had caught up with us. We looked around our beautiful little condo, so carefully laid out to support our comfort and our development as people, and we saw the clues to our situation in the paintings we'd chosen to hang, paintings we'd made together. One of the paintings was of two people, a man and a woman, sitting on top of the world - a wonderful idea, a delightful image. The man and the woman were seated back to back, supporting each other, looking in two very different directions and now, so were we. Another small painting pictured two fabulous mystical creatures singing together, each with its own ladder leading to its own little cloud.

Green Kitchens
What is a Bag-E-Wash?
During my green kitchen research, I got a very enthusiastic email from Jeanne Piekos, President of Bag-E-Wash. She recommends complimenting your green lifestyle with her conscious products. Renae
Bag-E-Wash is a work of reusable ingenuity at its best, the Bag-E-Wash creates an easy, inexpensive way to wash and dry your resealable plastic bags.
Bag-E-Wash is the first-of-its-kind dishwasher accessory that allows consumers to wash and dry zipper-style food storage bags in the dishwasher. Bag-E-Wash is adjustable so it works with sandwich size up to gallon size bags. One Bag-E-Wash washes two sandwich (or quart size bags) or one gallon size bags. I always have two in my dishwasher and never take them out. If I am not using them I just place plates between the looped bands or lower the bands and place a bowl or a pot over them. The other Bag-E-Wash factoid I love sharing is that one box of (30) gallon size bags washed with Bag-E-Wash and reused 50 times each keeps 1,500 bags out of our landfills and oceans and saves $150!

Bau-biologie and Ecology
Understanding the Goal
Provided by IBE
The International Institute for Bau-biologie and Ecology,Inc.
The German term "Bau-Biologie" means "building biology" or "building for life."
Building Ecology can be defined as the relationship between the building and the environment. The phrase "Bau-Biologie and Ecology" specifically refers to the study of - the impact of the built environment on human health, and the application of this knowledge to the construction of natural homes and workplaces; and - the holistic interaction of human involvement with the environment and the regenerative sustainability of the environment.
The underlying principle is one of "balance." All materials that come from the natural environment make up the "living structure" and will promote health. When these materials are returned to the natural environment they will cause no harm. Problems occur for people and the environment when synthetic materials and man-made pollutants are introduced. IBE is in support of "Green Programs" as they promote the removal of all pollutants from the built environment.
The IBE Principle sets a new vision of going beyond green by going beyond the standard material, methods and construction practices. The IBE Principle vision integrates ecology and biology with allied health practices. The engineering and energy conservation techniques are combined with the economics of each of these decisions resulting in a sustainability which is healthier for the occupant and the planet. The IBE mission brings together design methods and technology to provide the information needed to create healthy homes and workplaces. This knowledge will raise awareness, provide tools for solutions, and promote effective ecological practices for our future generations.

Conscious Design Tips
My Green Kitchen
Viana Muller of Whole World Botanicals is sharing her dream green kitchen advice with you.
It is her own personal wish list !
People going green eat a lot of vegetables and fruit. The standard refrigerator with its small crisper drawers are inadequate for this type of diet. I would suggest a refrigerator that is really a cooler of the type they use in restaurants which are much shallower than home refrigerators and more practical for storing lots of veggies and fruit. The freezer can be a separate small unit, under the "island." I also suggest enough "tall space" to hold numerous healthy, homemade teas for holistic medicinal purposes.
I also suggest a space for the juicer and blender to be kept on a counter on a permanent basis. I also suggest a solar tube which can be used for daytime lighting in the kitchen, avoiding electric lights and providing natural daylight. I suggest no dishwasher--or one that is rarely used. I suggest a space for an indoor composter. I suggest a type of bread toaster that is done by hand over a gas flame on the stove. It is a lot of fun and avoids the electric toaster.
I suggest large glass bean jars to hold beans for sprouting in the kitchen and a special cupboard where the bean sprouts are started and a special window space (or space under solar tube where bean sprouts can be "finished."
I suggest making the kitchen a real work and recreation room as well as a cooking room inorder to encourage more home cooking--which is both green and healthy. Have a computer nook in the kitchen. Have a flat TV screen. Make it attractive enough area to encourage socializing.

Green Travel Tip -Save $$$
- Pack light. Extra weight not only requires extra fuel, it may cost you additional baggage costs.
- Print your maps & tourist information ahead of time. Instead of buying expensive guidebooks and maps, which are heavy and cumbersome, print the sections you need from online travel websites.
- Buy a solar charger. Most cameras, phones and iPods can be charge with a solar charger, which saves carbon dioxide emissions and energy. You'll save money at home, and you won't use extra energy resources while you're overseas.
- Stay with family or friends. Hotels use massive amounts of energy and resources through daily cleaning, mini bottles of shampoo, lights burning unnecessarily, and so on. If you do stay at a hotel, re-use your towels, sheets, bathroom glasses and other amenities.
- Try a home exchange. This type of ethical tourism allows you to get an insider's feel for the country while stimulating local economic growth. You'll live like a local, buy home-grown produce and goods, and eat in neighborhood restaurants.
- Travel by train or bicycle. Trains and bikes are the most eco-friendly transportation options.
- Rent small cars. The smaller your car, the less gas money you'll spend - and the fewer emissions will pour into the air. Better yet, ride buses, trains and subways as much as you can. Look into hybrid-electric or biodiesel cars, which may not be as expensive as you think.
- Eat local. Picnic at least once a day with food from the local market or grocery store - it's healthier, less expensive, and often tastier. Always have your own refillable water bottle, and buy water purification tablets if the water is a concern.
- Visit parks and nature reserves. Supporting the protected areas ensures that they'll be maintained. The entrance fees are usually reasonable, and you're often encouraged to stay as long as you like.
- Buy local handicrafts. Refrain from buying souvenirs that exploit wildlife or the environment, such as ivory, tortoiseshell, coral or animal hides. Handicrafts made by locals are not only sustainable, they're often less expensive

Safe Paint milk paint
New SafePaint Mixes Style and Environmental Safety
There is a new product on the market called SafePaint. It is just that --safe. The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company, trying to perfect a formula for painting interior walls, has come up with a paint product that is both environmentally safe as well as personally safe.
SafePaint was developed because so many people wanted a milk paint that adhered well to an already painted surface or to a nonporous surface. The company has given the new product the name SafePaint to accentuate one of its most important qualities, that it is safe for people who may have adverse reactions to chemically-based paints. According to the company s MSDS, the ingredients in SafePaint are all-natural and bio-degradable, with zero VOCs. It contains no unsafe materials, has no paint odor, and is water soluble.
And, like their traditional milk paint, SafePaint will not fade or wear. There have been items found in places such as King Tut 's tomb that were painted with milk paint and retain the same vivid colors they had when applied in ancient Egypt.

Yankee Stadium gets Feng Shui nod !
Recently, the Daily Record posted an article about the feng shui of the new Yankee Stadium. We thought you would enjoy this article, and we would love to have your comments and insights. How did they do?
Renae
Feng Shui experts optimistic new Yankee Stadium is built for success
By Rosemary Black
Daily News Staff writer
September 20th, 2008
"There'll be bigger seats, more legroom and cupholders for all. Oh, and 410 party suites, too.
But will the new Yankee Stadium radiate as much of a feel-good aura as the old one does? Or did designers drop the ball when it comes to ensuring good feng shui?
The ancient Chinese art of creating a harmonious and positive space involves arranging the furniture in a particular way, or deciding how to "site" a building. These days, it's typically applied to homes and offices, but considering that the Yankees brand new home is a very important piece of real estate, it's important that, well, that its yin and yang be balanced. Or at least not completely out in left field.
As excitement over the stadium builds to a fever pitch, feng shui experts (who've also spent time cheering the Yankees in the current stadium) tell what makes the current stadium have such good feng shui, and what they think the new one needs most to have the same feel-good ambience.
The new Yankee Stadium's got a better overall shape, says, feng shui consultant and creator of a DVD entitled "Feng Shui 101."
"It looks to have an evened-up space, not so odd, which gives it a nice flow all around," he says. "And the seats are more evenly distributed, which is very good."
The new entrance is welcoming, too, he says, meaning that as people enter they will immediately be put into a good mood.
Steven Post, co-founder of the Geomancy/Feng Shui Education Organization in San Francisco, likes the "money bag" shape of the original stadium, built in 1923, with a short right field and a more expansive left field. After its renovation in the mid '70s, he notes the stadium retained a similar shape but got a more balanced outfield. The new stadium, Post says, doesn't have the "money bag" shape to the outfield, suggesting that the design "is not as strong for economic success as the previous two."

Color Alchemy
By Jami Lin
I have been working with color since I was three years old and that's why I know that after experiencing the ColorAlchemy event, you'll never go back to living in black and white!
While my experience with all the experts was wonderful and I still have gems to discover from all their color secrets, what happened with Ranoli (HeartAndHomeHealing.com) blew my mind!
Ranoli holds a Ph.D. in metaphysical studies and is a certified Heart and Soul Practitioner of the Institute of Multidimensional Cellular Healing.
Afterward we taped a video at her Colorado home, I told Ranoli that we were having trouble selling a house in Miami. She did a long distance clearing and discovered that someone had put a "curse" on me to sabotage everything I do. (No matter how much you try to have the sincerest intentions, you can't please everyone!) Being the skeptic, I gave Ranoli 3 names and she was able to identify the guy who bought our previous house (who was the only person that my husband and I could think of that could do such a thing). Ranoli taught me how to clear my karma with him (and its on the video) and do a fire clearing that was different than I've done before.
Ranoli "checked in with the powers" and the house is now clear to welcome the right buyer. That was two weeks ago. Frustrated in this challenging market, at least I surrendered and stepped out of the way with no attachment to the outcome. I am focusing my attention on illuminating the world with color and I am "allowing" the knock on the door - all doors! All possibility! There is no doubt I feel lighter and excited!
Wow, it is amazing what you'll learn about color, your life, and most importantly, the process to grow your life. Live in Living Color!
Enjoy Ranoli's videos that features how to do an energetic space clearing and remember to register for the ColorAlchemy Web Conference for another 20 experts! Ranoli's clearing videos are Part 1, 2 & 3
In celebration of my new, full-color ColorAlchemy book , I created The FREE International ColorAlchemy Web Conference.

Wisdom of your Face
The Wisdom of Your Face
Change Your Life with Chinese Face Reading!
by Jean Haner
What if you could tell, just by looking at others, how they tend to think, feel, and behave? What if your partner's face revealed the best way to resolve any conflicts between you? And what if you could discover in your own face the wisdom that you need in order to be your true self?
Based on the same ancient foundation as acupuncture and Chinese medicine, face reading has been in the "research and development" phase for over 3,000 years. When translated to make it meaningful for our Western lives, it's a powerful source of wisdom that we can all access. Chinese face reading shows you how to live your life in alignment with your own natural flow, find the life path that gives you joy, attract relationships that nurture you, and most of all, enable you to feel compassion for yourself and others. This book will forever change how you see yourself . . . and all the people in your life!

Nature Notes
Aster
A Symbol of Love and Daintiness, the Aster has been called the enchanted flower. In ancient times, it was thought that the perfume from their burning leaves could drive away evil serpents. Today, they're known as a talisman of love and a symbol of patience. In China, they also represent fidelity.
Asters were placed on the graves of French soldiers to symbolize afterthought and the wish that things had turned out differently. One myth tells that asters were created from stardust when Virgo looked down from the heavens and wept. |

he Water Dog month begins on October 8 at 6:26 am. and ends on November 7 at 9:45 am. The Dog. is eleventh in the "Cycle of Twelve". The fixed element carried by the Dog is Yang Earth. The Heaven Stem this month is Yang Water resulting in a month of Water sitting on Earth. The Water Dog is filled with warmth and concern. After the wash and rinse cycle of the Rooster month you can expect a welcomed month of compassionate and supportive energy
Dog times are about coming home; coming home to ourselves, returning to the soil and having an appreciation of the things that truly serve us. Relationships are essential and are an appropriate focal point for this Dog month. The Dog provides the opportunity to take all the lessons learned during the rigors of the previous Rooster month and to integrate them in the most useful way into all we do. The stem and branch of the month provide an opportunity to re-stabilize the generally unstable energy of this year.

Johnny Depp's Island to be Solar and Hydrogen Powered
Celebrity Johnny Depp has his own Bahama island, one that is rumored to have cost about 3 milliondollars. He is planning on converting his home to use solar hydrogen technology. " For the green-minded Depp, diesel generators just weren't an option. So he turned to Mike Strizki to help him build a system that would produce enough power to quench his celebrity-born thirst for decadence while not throwing off massive amounts of greenhouse gas. The result is a solar system that stores excess energy as hydrogen for use at night, or during cloudy times of day".
Mike Strizki is the inventor that created the nation's first solar-hydrogen house in New Jersey - without sacrificing any of the amenities included in his 3,500 square-foot home.
The project cost for Depp's home on the island is expected to run between $250,000-$500,000 - which, for someone with an island, isn't a bad deal for unlimited, clean energy.

Because of the vibrational vortex energy of Sedona, well known for it's healing quality, you will be able to access your higher consciousness in ways you have never done before. There are few better places to contact the voice of the higher-self, the God voice within and begin a dialog that provides ongoing guidance and direction. Many people who have never before felt earth energy emanations experience this firsthand in Sedona.
The pilgrimage includes exploration of vortices and sacred sites in the greater Sedona area along with meditation, guided visualizations, ceremony and exercises at the sites themselves. Time for meditation - searching for the answers to your life questions - are supported each day at a different vortex.
After lunch on Saturday, a traditional Native American Fire Ceremony is planned with Sam Tso. To the Dinê, as the Navajo people call themselves, fire is one of the sacred elements, the medium of purification and transformation. When they become aware of something in their lives or about themselves that is creating imbalance or disharmony, the Dinê build a fire and work with the hot coal in a specific ritualistic manner to help release the issue or problem that is causing disharmony and restore balance. It is a great gift to be able to work with Sam, one you will never forget.
I look forward to sharing again this incredible journey for the fourth year. Throughout the trip I will be honored to 'hold space' for you, so you're only thoughts are of your spiritual journey. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call. Peace and light,
June Crane

My design career has been devoted to aiding people in having what works for them and nurtures their daily lives rather than the latest trend." says Lennon. "When I'm designing inventory for the store rather than for a specific customer's order, I think of myself as creating something for someone special I have yet to meet."
