Season of Light
By
Terah Kathryn Collins

Terah Kathryn Collins is the author of six books on Feng Shui and the founder of the Western School of Feng Shui in San Diego, CA.
'Tis the Season when short days and cool temperatures beckon us to spend more time indoors. Feng Shui sees the winter season as a time when the Fire element, represented by the sun, is low and needs to be strengthened or "stoked" in our homes to nurture our health and happiness. To do this, we warm and brighten our interiors with lighting and other Fire-related enhancements.
Candlelight is an instant mood-maker and brings out the best in people's skin tones. Transform a room by lighting it entirely with the luminous magic of candlelight. With safety always in mind, hang candleholders on the walls and old-fashioned candelabras from the ceiling to fill the room with an enchanting glow. Group pillar candles, tea lights, votives, and tapers together to create multi-tiered "banks" of illumination. Use reflective trays and holders to multiply and magnify the light. Choose one candle color for an elegant look, or a variety of colors to capture a more playful casual atmosphere.
The fireplace symbolizes the heart of a home, as it warms a space and inspires the feelings of comfort and safety. In Feng Shui's elemental cycle, the Wood element intensifies the Fire element, making the heat and light they produce together particularly pleasing on a long winter's night. Ideally, a wood-burning fireplace is kept at the ready with fresh logs for the next fire. Avoid leaving the spent ashes of a previous fire on display for any length of time, as this connotes the loss of warmth and light.

Things We Can Do Every Day
by
Yasha Jampolsky
Many of these ideas are not new and I am certain that many of you have heard them before. In fact many of these ideas have made it to the mainstream and are often touted by the media. They are at the heart of living a greener life and should be repeated over and over again until they have been heard by all. Even though it is difficult to argue with their simple logic, not enough of us are implementing them. So here is a friendly reminder:

  • Live in the smallest house that will serve your needs. There is no one that you need to impress with grandiose accomodations. Impress them instead with who you are and the choices you make. The energy benefits to you and to our planet far outweigh the rewards from bragging rights.
  • Use green materials and building methods whenever you can.
  • Read labels, avoid cleaning products that contain phosphates or chlorine. Also avoid any products that contain toxic chemicals. For a short list of 500 substances to avoid CLICK HERE these should not be desiminated into the environment by our use let alone be present in our homes. There are green alternatives now available for almost every product containing toxic substances.
  • When it's time to replace major appliances, replace them with new ones having "Energy Star" high EER ratings.
  • Use alternative energy means whenever possible
  • Play with your thermostat. You can be comfortable a few degrees warmer in summer and a few degrees cooler in winter

We are water ... we flow together
By
Shara Gardner
The Spirit of Water
Sitting near a creek this morning, I was reminded how the continuous stream of moving water carries the experience and memory of every surface it touches and every environment is passes through before it arrives at the sea. Dr. Emoto confirmed what many water scientists had already known for many years. Water's molecules and clusters remember everything and take on the molecular structure of the memories most dominant in its experience. Water, turn, influences everything it touches. When the ocean receives the stream of water, it is receiving quite an elixir of billions of bits of information. Just think of the wisdom the ocean possesses. It's no wonder we travel great distances to get to the ocean in order to contemplate, rejuvenate and relax. Just being near a large body of water allows us to absorb POTENTIAL which then becomes part of our individual streams of consciousness.

With regard to the information we absorb, if we are wise, we pay attention to what positive insights we get from water, and make that wisdom a prominent part of our "operating system." If we are wise, we also pay attention to the toxins we are exposed to, and make sure they don't become a part of system. There are many things we don't want to carry with us, like the viruses of life. But we need to be aware of them so we don't innocently spread them to others. Such "bugs" come in the form of negativity, fear, greed, violence, lies and propaganda and more!.

Did you ever wonder what streams of consciousness feed into your pool of greater wisdom? Like the vast ocean, our minds and bodies have the ability to be influenced by streams that come from many sources - friends, enemies, lovers, co-workers, past programming, assumptions, history, our ancestors, daily events, world events, and interaction with the natural world. How do we keep our streams clean and clear so our greater wisdom body can thrive in truth and achieve our soul's greatest potential? How can we change the water we drink to reflect the highest and greatest good for ourselves and others?

'A Sacred Building is a Harmonic Structure for the Transformation of the Soul
It's purpose is to remind us of our true essence and Absolute connection to the universe'
Christian Kyriacou

Our homes hold the energy matrix of our thinking and behaviour as well as their own historical imprint and that of the land. In these unprecedented times of change on this planet it is essential that those of us working in service are living and working in spaces which support and optimise our well-being, to enable us to flow with grace and ease through this process of transformation.
March 2009, Christian and Sandy will be in the New York, New Jersey area offering workshops for architects, designers, and all others interested in manifesting miracles.

Green
Green for House Boats
Green is not just for land lubbers !
While at the NY Boat Show, I found these great Green Boating Tips to share with our readers.

While most boaters appreciate the natural resources that abound in the watersheds in which they boat, many are unaware of the impacts boating can have on those resources.
With rising gas prices and the environment top of mind for today's consumer, boaters are using their boats in different ways than in years past.
Reduce fuel consumption while on the water, including reducing cruising speed, tuning the engine and taking shorter trips.

Reduce fuel usage with slower speeds on the water, proper use of trim tabs to reduce drag, minimize the amount of time that you idle at the dock and minimize the use of onboard generators.

Use environmentally-friendly cleaning products.
Companies have developed non-toxic based biodegradable boat soaps, which have a minimal impact on the aquatic environment. We've also seen the introduction of color safe, oxygen release gels and cleansers that remove spots off of boats without using bleach or other hazardous materials.

HIMALAYAN SALT PRODUCTS
Himalayan Crystal Salt: the world's only natural ionizer and air purifier.
Himalayan Crystal Salt is one of the most profound and fundamental health re-discoveries of our time. This crystalline, unrefined salt comes from the original prime body of sea - This Primal Sea.
Located deep below the earths surface, Himalayan Crystal Salt was created when the primal sea, the place where scientist believe all life originated, was dried up by the energy of the sun and then compressed over millions of years by the pressure of the land masses that formed on top of it.
So what does that mean to us? Pure Himalayan Crystal Salt contains miraculous healing properties for both our environment and our bodies.
The air is filled with negative and positive ions. To maintain a healthy atmosphere, these negative and positive ions must remain in balance. However, electronic devices and our heating & cooling systems produce so many positive ions that our air is thrown off balance - resulting in stress, sleep disorders, migraine headaches, respiratory ailments and allergies, to name a few.
Now you can help counter the effects of these devices, reducing stress on your body and purifying your air with the extraordinary healing properties of Himalayan Crystal Salt as the world's only natural ionizer and air purifier. The crystal salt lamp can help neutralize the positive ions and electromagnetic field frequencies. Therefore, our human energy field will be balanced through the harmonizing energy vibration of the crystal. This can help with relaxation, strengthen the immune system, the heart, the adrenals, and the thyroid to mention just a few of our major physical body functions. The electric charge is nothing other than pure energy. The constant and high natural energy vibration of the gently heated crystal salt lamp is equal to and compatible with human energy field. Therefore, the crystal perfectly harmonized with our own bio-electromagnetism.

Feng Shui
What Is The True Essence of Feng Shui
By
Mary Jane Kasliner, AAS, BS, ACFSI, RYT
Those of us who have studied the ancient art and science of Feng Shui know its roots are embedded into the laws of nature. The pure principles of ch'i take hold of the foundation of this extraordinary philosophy. We understand that by tuning into the dynamics of ch'i movement internally and externally a moment of "Peak Experience" can occur. Sounds, colors and tactile sensations become more intense, and for the first time we may understand our connection to the rest of the Universe. We truly experience the depth and meaning of objects and events in our lives because we are aligned with the energy of life itself.
Feng Shui embraces the premise of oneness - an inherent wholeness between the very essence of our soul and the Universe. Unfortunately, the daily rigors of life have the tendency to trick us into "disassociating" or giving us the impression we are separate from others, nature and the world. The solution is to open the door to our soul through meditations whether with silent or movement formats like Qigong, Tai Chi or Yoga practice. Alignment of our inner ch'i automatically prepares us to harmonize the ch'i within our immediate space.

Ask Conscious Design
What are Poison Arrows?
We asked Kartar Diamond to offer her insight into the concept of "poison arrows" in feng shui.
Poison arrows describe the sharp corner edges of a building or any design with a sharp edge, projecting towards another structure. The theory is that the poison arrows will send or emit a defensive or even hostile line of qi (air currents) towards whatever building or object is in direct line with it.
If a large building sends poison arrows to a smaller building, it can undermine the health and well-being of the occupants in the building on the receiving end of the poison arrows.

Unintentionally, the corner edges of roof lines on some houses will also project this negative qi toward another house.

Building Green
Building Green: A Complete How-to Guide to Alternative Building Methods
by Clarke Snell and Tim Callahan

-- 600+ pages -- approx. 1500 color photos -- 80 color illustrations
To us, green building is less about materials and more about a shift in perspective. It means creating a building that fits its inhabitants and the building site like a glove to the benefit of both. To do that, the conception, design, and construction of a building needs to be a seamless, cohesive whole. That, in turn, means that the inhabitants (you) need to be deeply involved in the creation of the building. That's often difficult because, to be blunt, the people from whose imagination the building has sprung (you again) usually know nothing about building.
What can we say? This is simply an incredible book. It's scope and organization make it useful to a wide variety of people. For the complete novice, it can serve as an eye-opening general introduction to the process of building. On the other hand, it's also a good resource for seasoned builders who want to expose themselves to some popular alternatives. In addition, it's invaluable for anyone thinking of building (or paying to build) their own green home. It will also make a great book for an undergraduate design/build course in architecture. Finally, the breadth of photos of buildings around around the world and up your green building street make it a beautiful coffee table book.

Nature Notes
Peony
The Peony has a rich and recorded history that dates back thousands of years.

One legend has it that the peony is named after Paeon, a physician to the gods, who received the flower on Mount Olympus from the mother of Apollo. And another tells the story of that same physician who was "saved" from the fate of dying as other mortals by being turned into the flower we know today as the peony.

The Peony is the traditional floral symbol of China, and is revered as the flower of riches and honor. With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage. You will often see the Peony used to enhance powerful feng shui remedies !

Stone Power
Tidings of Comfort and Joy

By Deana Schimmenti
Joy and happiness are an essential part of spiritual growth, grace, and love. All of these are what make a fulfilling life. We must always remember to take pleasure in the simple things in life in order to really enjoy the life we are given. Joy is the emotion felt when we accomplish a task or when we are able to serve others who need us. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines "joy" as the state of happiness or felicity.

Profiles - Return to Nature
Sam Tso - Navajo Healer
Sam Tso was raised by his elders in an ancestral, remote area of Dinetah (Navajo Nation), Arizona. He grew up with the medicine people in his family and learned their ways by living their ways. While growing up he acquired many rare oral teachings and stories. This made him the keeper of his family history. He served as a translator for the Navajo elders in the legal battle for his family and community's right to remain on their ancestral homelands. The lawsuit of his Great-great Grandmother Manybeads brought Sam before the United Nations and Congressional Committees in Washington, D.C. In the aftermath of the Manybeads lawsuit, Tso continues as a carpenter, silversmith, rock carver, storyteller and teacher. His work as an activist continues on behalf of all people whose rights are being denied or questioned.

Sam is certified in Permaculture, is an alumni of the Flagstaff Leadership Program, is a traditional counselor at N.A.C.A. (Native American Community Action), volunteers for the Flagstaff Literacy Program, and was part of an award winning Learn and Serve Grant at Star School.
Sam often travels around the United States to share his oral traditions and teachings including edible and medicinal plants, sustainable living, survival skills, and traditional guidance. He also does physical healing sessions including spinal adjustments and massage. Sam also does hands on traditional medicine. His techniques combine massage, acupressure, skeletal adjustments, energy balancing, and herbal remedies according to the client's preference. Sam has a keen insight and many say he is a human MRI.

Sam Tso offers programs and guided tours through a variety of Indigenous and Geological sites throughout Northern Arizona. The Dine (Navajo) live within the four sacred mountains. "Dookooosliid," the San Fransisco Peaks is the western boundary and ranges from 7000 to 8500 feet. This unique ponderosa forest is a medicine gathering place and home to sacred springs. Sam utilizes these in his teachings.

Other activities include talking circles, where Sam uses words to heal. Life can be trying, and many traditional stories can apply to our hectic, busy life styles today. Integrated with traditional sweat lodge sessions, you will truly feel cleansed inside and out.

What's your Birth Star?
By
Jon Sandifer

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times
There are nine different Stars in I Ching Astrology and they all relate to one of the eight trigrams in the I Ching and the T'ai Chi itself.

It is important to remember that the I Ching Astrology year begins on the first day of the Chinese Solar Year, 4 February, annually. Therefore, anyone born between 1 January and 3 February, actually belongs to the previous year.

Here's a simple way to calculate your own Birth Star. Here's an example: both Richard Branson and Stevie Wonder were both born in 1950.
