Conscious Design Magazine asked Jon to take a look at some of the popular icons of today, and
see what their faces have to say. Thank you Jon for your insights !

Jon Sandifer is better known for his knowledge of Feng Shui. He is the author of the very popular Feng Shui Astrology by Ballantine Books (1997) and Feng Shui For Life (Destiny Books) and The Authentic I Ching (Watkins Books). Jon has studied Face Reading, Macrobiotics, the 9 Stars, Feng Shui and the I Ching since 1977.

Here are his insights into six faces.

The Art of Face Reading

The skill of being able to read a face was born out of the early cultures of Tibet, China and later into Korea and Japan. It actually formed a part of medicine. There were always two aspects that were considered. These were (a) What is the constitution of an individual? And (b) what is their current condition?

As far as constitution is concerned, it's more like a person's potential. So when you look at a face with a view to trying to understand how they may fare in a relationship, it is really that angle that I'm coming from in this article. What can some of the telltale signs from this 2,000-year-old system reveal about modern celebrity faces? The principle is the same, the practice needs to be adjusted slightly!

The Female Face
The archetype feminine face is one that appears superficially to be much more yin. Yin in this respect means that the features are more open, the eyes larger, the forehead bigger and the head narrowing down to more of a point at the chin. Generally, the overview of the face is one that's either oval, narrow, or narrow at the chin and wider at the forehead, rather like a triangle sitting on its head. Also, if the mouth and lips are bigger and wider, the cheeks are open, the forehead is open and the eyes are big and further apart - these are all indications of a more soft yin expression.

In the eyes of Hollywood, PR and Advertising, aspects of these archetypal female faces are what directors, producers and art directors are looking for. Here are some examples for you to have a look at.

Heidi Klum

At a glance, Heidi's face is actually quite yang and masculine in many aspects. The reason being that her eyes are relatively narrow and close together, her nose is quite narrow and her eyebrows appear fairly thick - which is a sign of vitality and almost masculinity. All of this is on a superficial level. This to me reveals that Heidi is no pushover. She will know exactly what she wants and how to get it as well. The deep-set eyes reveal that her nervous system is as sharp as a barrel of monkeys - she knows exactly what's going on and how to negotiate a good deal.

The pointed tip at the centre of her upper lip indicates that she's actually quite fussy. This fastidiousness can be revealed in a relationship. It could be her only liking particular types of food, or music, or friends, or clothes. This fussiness can also be very positive as she has no wishy-washy ideas about politics, relationships or other people.

Her nose and cheekbones feature very strongly in her face. This central area of the face, if it is prominent, as it is with her, suggests that she's very ambitious.

Overall, here is someone that appears to be an archetypal beautifully yin woman, but from my angle she also reveals a very steely strong sense of purpose, will and strength. By no means a pushover!

Britney Spears

Compared to Heidi, Britney is far, far more yin. You can see this yourself. Her whole face appears more open, more gentle and even more vulnerable. She has the classic high, open forehead and then a more narrow pointed chin, together with large doe-like eyes. All of this classically is the ultimate yin or female face.

Her hairline comes to a peak at the centre and this is known as the "widow's peak." This does not mean that literally she becomes a widow, but suggests that some aspect of separation has occurred or will occur in her life. Be it between her parents, her children or her husband. Secondly, there is a big gap between her eyes and her eyebrows, which again suggests the same kind of separation issues occurring in her life.

The broad area between her eyes, at the top of the nose, known as the bridge, is very thick and strong. In China this was regarded as a sign of wealth; usually wealth that came through from ancestors.

Her narrow chin is a sure sign that she's not very practical. She does not share the same high cheekbones that Heidi has regarding ambition. Her lower lip is much more puffy compared to her upper lip - again making her a little unreliable and weaker in the belly - known as the guts.

Overall the feeling is that of vulnerability, gentleness, and softness.

Hannah Montana

The overall feel that you get from Hannah's face is one of gentleness, warmth and helpfulness. She has a very grounded and trusting face. Her strong forehead suggests intelligence, with a real open mind to new ideas and perspectives.

Her thick eyebrows reveal enormous amounts of vitality. She is the spirit of youth and spring. As you look at her, the left side of her face is dominated more by her father's influence. The straggly eyebrow close to the bridge of her nose on her father's left side is a strong sign of independence in Hannah herself. She actually got this sense of independence from her father. The left eye (eyes reveal our nervous system) is deep and again suggests that her father's presence is very strongly behind her.

Her jaw is square and her chin rounded which suggests she's enormously practical. Here's a young lady who can change a light bulb, repair her car and decorate her own apartment all at the same time! The relatively thick bridge of the nose suggests that she is taken care of well financially - be it from her parents or her husband or her job.

In the romance stakes she is very reliable and honest.

The Male Face

Constitutionally, a yang face for men would have to bring out some qualities of ruggedness, aggression and drive. The yang-shaped faces are ones that are more square, more round or broad at the base and narrower at the forehead. Large ears, thick bushy eyebrows, deep-set eyes, strong chins, clefts or dimples in the chin are all signs of very strong male attributes. Whether they're reliable or not as boyfriends, husbands or lovers is another matter altogether!

Justin Timberlake

At a glance, Justin has quite a gentle yin, almost feminine face. The broad open forehead narrowing down towards a more pointed chin. His ears are close to his head making him a good listener, a good shoulder to cry on. His eyes are fairly narrow and close together making him good at dancing and coordination in life. His chin is narrow - and I would suggest he's not very practical and probably has to call out a mechanic to fix his car! The long nose and the broad open cheeks suggest that he's very ambitious. His eyebrows are reasonably thick, suggesting vitality and they are straight, which is always a good sign that he's straightforward in life.

Will Smith

A bright, open, vivacious face. One where honesty exudes. He has an enormous forehead which is always a sign that he is either more intellectually or spiritually motivated.

There's a large distance between his eyebrows which indicates there's some kind of separation in his life: this could be his parents, his family, his siblings, his children or lovers.

His ears are not enormous, but they do tend to stick forward. This means that he's always good at receiving information from one angle. He must be a movie director's dream! He takes his orders well - like a GI. Equally, if he is as involved as they say he is with Scientology, then he could really do what he's told…

As a boyfriend, astute, friendly, warm, but he likes doing things his way and in his time.

Brad Pitt

Of all the faces in this feature, this is the one that I find the most interesting, whether male of female. It is the least homogenised of all! Here you've got some strong yin and strong yang combined. This strong yin-yang polarity makes for an exciting and interesting personality.

He has a broad, wide open forehead which suggests intelligence and openness to new ideas. His eyebrows are reasonably thick and bushy, but are particularly wild on his father's side showing that he has a strong independent streak. His eyes are like a wolf, narrow and deep. This means that he's extremely witty, sharp and focused. He'd be very good at any kind of sport that involved hand-eye coordination.

His ears lie flat against his head and this indicates he's a great listener - what women enjoy! He will listen to all opinions and all points of view.

Although his chin is narrow towards the tip, his jaw is actually rather wide - rather like Robert Redford's. This indicates he's practical, he likes the outdoors and would be far more at home out on a farm.

He's strongest feature are his eyes which, for a man, indicate that he's incredibly driven and focused. He will always be prone to some form of independence or desire for independence in his life and this, as I say, is indicated by the 'straying' eyebrows on the left side - his father's side.
